FAQ’s: The Application Process for Chemistry Internships

Who Can Apply to Work with ChemTalk?

We invite you to apply for ChemTalk’s chemistry internships if you are a college, master’s, or PhD student in one of the following areas: chemistry/biochemistry, education, marketing/PR, science communication, graphic design, or computer science. 

We invite you to apply to become a volunteer ChemTalk content reviewer or an advisory board member if you:

  • Are a high school chemistry teacher or have taught high school chemistry recently 
  • Work in chemistry/science curriculum review or development
  • Have worked/work in philanthropy or fundraising 
  • Have worked/work in marketing or PR 

How Many Hours Will I be Expected to Commit to ChemTalk?

Chemistry internships at ChemTalk typically expect interns to commit a minimum of 8-10 hours per week to ChemTalk, but this depends on the team. Make sure to discuss availability if offered an interview.

Can I Make Changes to my Application After Submission?

No, you may not make changes to your application after submission. Please ensure you answer all questions thoroughly, accurately, and thoughtfully before submitting. We recommend that you write your answers to short answer questions on a separate document and then copy and paste them into your application before submitting.

How are Applications Reviewed?

Applications are reviewed by team leads during revision periods every two months.

Can I Apply if I Live Outside the United States?

Yes, you may apply for our unpaid internships if you live outside the United States. We will do our best to accommodate time differences, but we expect transparency regarding paperwork and ask that you submit any necessary paperwork in advance.

Can I Apply for More Than One Team?

Yes, you may apply to more than one team, but you may only work on one team. If two teams offer you an interview/internship, you must choose one. We ask that you be transparent regarding how many teams you have applied to in the application and/or interview process. 

What Teams Can I Apply For?

Most teams take applications during every application window ChemTalk offers. Teams include our podcast team, our article writing team, our worksheets team, our Academic Enhancement team, our outreach and PR team, and our design team (summer only).

What are ChemTalk’s Application Windows?

ChemTalk has six different application windows during which you can apply during the year. 

Cycle 1:
  • Application Window: January 1 – February 15 (6 weeks)
  • Application Review: February 16 – February 22 (1 week)
  • Interviews: February 23 – March 7 (2 weeks)
  • Decision Day: March 8
  • Onboarding Week: March 9 – March 15
Cycle 2:
  • Application Window: March 1 – April 15 (6 weeks)
  • Application Review: April 16 – April 22 (1 week)
  • Interviews: April 23 – May 7 (2 weeks)
  • Decision Day: May 8
  • Onboarding Week: May 9 – May 15
Cycle 3:
  • Application Window: May 1 – June 15 (6 weeks)
  • Application Review: June 16 – June 22 (1 week)

Does ChemTalk Allow Me to Use this Internship As College Credit?

Yes! We highly encourage you to work with your school to use your ChemTalk chemistry internship as credit, or even get paid for it by your school. Under these circumstances, we expect to receive any paperwork we must fill out to support you at least two weeks before it is due. If there is an issue with our application windows and you being able to receive credit/ a stipend from your school for your ChemTalk internship, please email ChemTalk director Roxanne Salkeld at roxanne@chemistrytalk.org with subject line “[Urgent]- ChemTalk Application Paperwork”.

What is ChemTalk’s Mission?

ChemTalk’s mission is to build the next generation of STEM leaders by making chemistry fun, engaging, and accessible. ChemTalk was founded in 2021 for this purpose and has since positively impacted millions of students and teachers. We reach hundreds of thousands of people each month through our website www.chemistrytalk.org and millions every year through our popular social media channels TikTok and Instagram. What Can ChemTalk Offer Me?

By participating in ChemTalk’s chemistry internships, you will have the opportunity to:

  •  build a portfolio of your work
  •  learn crucial professional skills in a supportive and kind remote work environment to ensure success in your career 
  • Connect with leads and other interns interested in the same field 
  • Earn a letter of recommendation and a certificate of completion at the end of your internship 

Please note that all ChemTalk chemistry internships are unpaid at this time due to funding.

How Does ChemTalk Ensure an Inclusive, Supportive Environment?

DEI is critical to the success of ChemTalk’s mission. In our most recent anonymous staff survey, 100% of respondents said they felt supported by their team lead. In addition to providing a supportive environment, ChemTalk is led by those who have been historically excluded from science spaces. ChemTalk is female-led with over 70% of leadership staff and interns identifying as women, and over 80% of ChemTalk staff comes from a background traditionally underrepresented in science.
